Good Counsel’s Golf Team is Above Par

When you think of spring athletics at Good Counsel, does golf come to mind? Our Good Counsel Golf team begins practicing in February and plays matches from March through May. The co-ed team can have ten players on the squad, but only six participate on game day. These student-athletes practice two times a week and have one game per week. Last year, they had six wins and two losses. While that is a good match record, they haven’t been number one in the WCAC conference for twenty years.

Not anyone at Good Counsel can play golf. You must have prior experience. To be part of the Good Counsel golf team, you need to shoot 8-10 over par. Coach Booth says, “You need to have pretty good skills, the par of most golf courses is 70 to 72, and to be good enough for the Good Counsel team, you usually shoot around the 80s.” The team practices on many golf courses in the area, including the Manor Country Club, Laytonsville, Northwest, and Needwood golf courses.

Why would anyone want to play golf? Coach Booth says, “People who play golf love being out there. Golf is a sport you strive to get better at. You can never perfect golf. Many people like high-intensity sports like football and rugby like golf because it’s completely the other side of that. It’s a quiet individual sport. You are playing golf against someone else; it’s not a team sport.”
