No Sleep in the Philippines

The Philippines, located in west Asia, consist of 7,107 islands over a span of 1,150 miles. There are 50 volcanoes on the islands, the largest being Mt. Mayon, located on the island of Luzon. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Its elevation is 8,081 feet and its smoke clouds can rise up to two miles high. Mt. Mayon has been active since 1616, and has erupted 47 times since.

The people of the Philippines are now in greater danger, as Mt. Mayon has been erupting more frequently in the past three years, giving natives minimal time to evacuate to safety. Local scientists have recently raised the evacuation level to 3 out of 5, causing over 50,000 people to leave their homes. After these loud and deadly eruptions take place, many earthquakes, tsunamis, and mudslides follow, leading to even more destruction. These natural disasters inflict great damage, but the Philippine people remain strong and hopeful for their country.
