GC Athlete Feature Q&A- Talayah Walker ‘24

Danny Chung-A-Fung “24
GC student-athlete Talayah Walker ’24, co-captain of the girl’s basketball team, is headed to Penn State.

When you think of Good Counsel, you probably think about its great athletic program. GC has won over 70 WCAC titles in the last decade alone, and graduates have gone on to play at the highest level in both college and professional sports. GC is always among the best sports schools in the area, in part because of our tremendous student-athletes.

In this recurring segment, you will be able to get to know some of the GC athletes who go out and represent our school in athletic events.

Today we get to feature Talayah Walker ‘24, who plays basketball for GC.  Talayah was one of the co-captains for the girl’s basketball team this year, and she’s committed to playing next year at Penn State University. In this feature, Talayah shares how she overcame the adversity of injury and why her teammates are so important to her, both during and after the recovery process.

When and why did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball when I was four years old. At first, I played because it was a family tradition, but I eventually started to love playing on my own.

What position do you play?

I’m a guard.

What has been your greatest challenge playing basketball–and how have you overcome it?

My greatest challenge was being injured last summer and not being able to play for months. My family and Good Counsel teammates have been supportive and encouraging throughout my recovery.

What’s your pregame hype song?

My pregame hype song is any song by Drake.

Talayah Walker ‘24- Talayah says that her greatest challenge was recovering from an injury she suffered last summer, but she credits her family and Good Counsel teammates for being “supportive and encouraging” during her recovery.

Off the Court:

When you’re not playing basketball, what else do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to hang out with my friends and family, go places and try new things.

What’s your favorite class in school?

My favorite class is definitely athletic training.

What’s your least favorite class?

My least favorite class is environmental science.

What are you interested in studying after high school?

I’m not sure what I’m going to study yet, however, I’m considering communications, marketing, or political science.

Who would you say is/ has been your biggest inspiration?

My mom has been my biggest inspiration because of how hardworking she is while still being an amazing person.

How do you feel that it’s your last year competing in high school? What has your favorite memory been during your high school career?

I’m really sad this is my last year, I loved playing with each teammate and coach I’ve had. My favorite memory would have to be beating PVI in my sophomore year.

Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently either on/off the field during your high school years?

I wouldn’t change anything. My experience has been great and I’ve learned so much from it!

What advice would you give to current and future Falcon student-athletes?

I would say that good or bad, your performance doesn’t define who you are. However, your attitude and effect on others does. Being a good teammate, friend, and leader is just as important as scoring a bunch of points.
