When you think of Good Counsel, you probably think about its great athletic program. GC has won over 70 WCAC titles in the last decade alone, and graduates have gone on to play at the highest level in both college and professional sports. GC is always among the best sports schools in the area, in part because of our tremendous student-athletes.
In this recurring segment, you will be able to get to know some of the GC athletes who go out and represent our school in athletic events.
Today we get to feature Sophia Sakkos ‘24, who plays tennis for GC. Sophia was one of the co-captains for the tennis team this past season! In this feature, Sophia talks about her time on the tennis court, what she likes to do off the court, and why her spirit animal would be a dog!
Introduction:
When and why did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis going into junior year of high school because my friend Carissa Parsons always talked about how much she loved it, so I wanted to try!
What position do you play?
There’s no specific position, but I play doubles with Gabby Georges [‘24].
Tennis:
What has been your greatest challenge playing tennis- and how have you overcome it?
Hitting the ball with my backhand was my biggest challenge. I overcame this difficulty by continuously practicing and slowly getting better at it.
What’s your pregame hype song?
Yeah! By Usher
Off the Court:
When you’re not playing tennis, what else do you like to do in your free time?
I like to hang out with my friends, go to the mall, go to the gym, and play Yahtzee with my family.
If you could compare yourself to an animal, what animal would it be and why? (What’s your spirit animal?)
I would compare myself to a dog because they’re my favorite animal and they’re very loyal. My spirit animal is also a dog!
School:
What’s your favorite class in school?
Math
What’s your least favorite class?
History
What are you interested in studying after high school?
I would like to go into the dental field!
Legacy:
Who would you say is/ has been your biggest inspiration?
My sister Ava is my biggest inspiration because she is very confident in what she does and always works to get what she wants.
What has your favorite memory been during your time at GC?
My favorite memory is Junior retreat because it brought me so close to many of my classmates.
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently either on/off the field during your high school years?
If I could change anything I would have joined tennis earlier!
What do you want your legacy to be at GC?
I want people to remember me as someone who makes people feel comfortable and that they can achieve anything they put their mind to.
