When you think of Good Counsel, you probably think about its great athletic program. GC has won over 70 WCAC titles in the last decade alone, and graduates have gone on to play at the highest level in both college and professional sports. GC is always among the best sports schools in the area, in part because of our tremendous student-athletes.
In this recurring segment, you will be able to get to know some of the GC athletes who go out and represent our school in athletic events.
Today we get to feature Dijon Fosu ‘26, who plays on the boys varsity soccer team. Dijon just wrapped up his second season on the Varsity Soccer team, where he was named to the All-WCAC Second Team!
In addition to playing soccer for GC, Dijon also plays on a travel club team along with some of his GC teammates. In this feature, Dijon talks about what it’s like to play for 2 different soccer teams and how he manages to stay focused. He also explains how soccer has taught him many life lessons, including how to be resilient.
Introduction:
When and why did you start playing soccer?
I started playing when I was five and it was my dad who got me interested. He watches it a lot so I picked up on it early.
What position do you play?
I play center back for high school and center midfield for my club team.
What’s your favorite part about playing soccer?
My favorite part about playing soccer is the exciting moments like scoring last minute goals or making important tackles. Being able to help the team in any way possible is the best feeling.
Soccer:
What has been your greatest challenge playing soccer- and how have you overcome it?
My greatest challenge has been keeping a clear mind after mistakes because sometimes after I make a mistake or have a bad game, I’ll think about it for a while. I overcame this by remembering to never be too high and never be too low. I don’t get upset with myself for bad performances and I don’t get overconfident after good ones.
What’s the team environment like? What do you guys do to bond on and off the field?
I think the team is really close and we all bond really well. We do things like competitive games in training and we have team dinners to make our bond stronger.
What’s your pregame hype song?
A song I like to listen to before games is “Can’t Leave Without It” by 21 Savage.
What is it like playing for two different soccer teams? Is it hard to balance at times?
It does get hard sometimes playing for two different teams at once. Physically, it’s really demanding and it also takes up a lot of time so I just make sure I use rest days wisely and find time to get schoolwork done.
What’s your biggest motivation when it comes to soccer? Who or what motivates you?
My biggest motivation in soccer is making my parents proud. They’ve provided for me my entire life and it was my dad who got me interested in the sport so the main goal is to give back to them.
When you’re not playing soccer, what do you like to do in your free time?
When I’m not playing soccer, I just relax at home. I like taking naps.
School:
What’s your favorite class in school?
My favorite class in school is History. Right now I’m taking Honors U.S. History.
What are you interested in studying after high school?
After high school, I want to get into business. Things like finance, accounting, and marketing really interest me.
Inspiration/Motivation:
Who would you say is/ has been your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration has been my mom. She’s always taught me to work hard and strive to be the best version of myself.
How has soccer shaped you as a person?
Soccer has made me more disciplined and resilient. A lot of the struggles that come with the sport can also be applied to real life situations. For example, you learn to never give up. When you go down a goal, you can’t get upset about it and stop playing and that’s the same way you shouldn’t give up in life when you experience a hardship.
