Education is crucial to our way of living. Whether you want to pursue a tech career, a law degree, or go the teaching route, what you learn in school is essential to your intellectual growth. Education helps develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills not only with math formulas but also with being decisive in a problematic situation. School is a place to build on this intelligence and receive extra help, when needed, to succeed.
The purpose of the Learning Center is to offer students an opportunity to receive help in any academic subject area. Academic assistance is found at the Thomas Fortune Fay Student Learning Center on the third floor, in the Media Center. The Center was made possible by the generosity of the Peace through Law Foundation, and Mr. Thomas Fortune Fay, a former member of the Good Counsel Board of Directors, and parent to two Good Counsel alumni. According to Mrs. Embley, the Fay Learning Center Coordinator, “The purpose of the Learning Center is to offer students an opportunity to receive help in any academic subject area. Students can come to the Learning Center during a study hall, lunch, before and after school”. The Learning Center is available before school from 8:00 a.m. to 8:25 a.m., during the school day from 8:30 a.m. to 3:25 p.m., and after school Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. The Learning Center offers after-school assistance in English and Writing on Mondays and Wednesdays, Math on Mondays through Thursdays, and Spanish on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Students can seek help and take advantage of what the Learning Center offers, getting extra instruction from teachers and NHS students. Mrs. Davis ’03 and Mrs. Boyle also assist by helping students with research and guiding them through the essay writing process. Mrs. Embley offers that “the Learning Center provides students help, with teachers, to improve their skill levels, get their work done, get papers edited and revised and gives them a place to study and get tutoring.”
Whether it is 15 minutes or an hour, assisted studying can positively impact academic outcomes. So, if you ever need extra help, stop by the Fay Learning Center, where all you need to do is ask.
