Fast ways to get NHS hours
All members of the National Honors Society are required to complete a minimum of 7 service hours. When most people think of NHS hours, they think of tutoring. However, there are many other options around the school to complete these hours. A helpful way to keep informed about upcoming service opportunities is to check for NHS update emails from Mrs. Shames. Within these emails are information and sign-ups for different tasks and events around the school. Here are some ways to get easy service hours:
Mrs. Bykowski’s Typing Project
How: Email Mrs. Bykowski or stop by the English resource room and tell her you heard about her NHS typing opportunity!
When: Anytime for the rest of the school year
Description: Mrs. Bykowski is currently re-typing an old grammar workbook into google docs so she can print it and use it for her students. All this task entails is re-typing words from a pdf onto a google document in a screen share. It sounds like a monotonous task, but it is swift and easy. A google drive with pdfs will be shared with you, and a google sheet that serves as a sign-up for whatever sections you would like to complete. In that same google sheet, you write how much time that section took you to complete, and you will receive that many minutes in your MobileServe. All this work is completed in your own time, whenever you want. You can do as little or as much as you want, depending on how many hours you want to complete. There are a lot of sections yet to be typed so that you can finish all your service hours in this opportunity alone.
Library Help
How: Ask Mrs. Davis
When: Anytime the library is open!
Description: Help Mrs. Davis at the library! Shelving books, helping put up displays, cutting things out, and coming up with creative ideas. The library needs extra help, so anytime you have a study hall or lunch, stop by and ask what you can do!
Holiday Fun
How: Check your NHS updates emails around a holiday season
When: Whenever it’s the holiday season!
Description: When the holidays come around, there is much to do around GC to prepare! Whether it’s helping to decorate resource rooms or specific school activities (like the gingerbread contest), many service opportunities will not only help your hours but also help you get into the holiday spirit! A lot of these are enjoyable activities like the following.
Concessions Stand
How: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b084eafa82faaf49-falcons#/
When: Whenever there is an open slot in the sign-up genius!
Description: Help out at Carl’s Corner after school or during games! Help customers, work the cash register, and grab food and drinks for people! Sometimes working at concessions can be scary for those who need more time with math in adding up items and change, but there are new cash registers that will do all of it for you! All you have to do is click the item the customer says they want on a small Ipad connected to the cash register, and it does all of the math for you. No more calculators! Once you get the hang of it, the time goes by quickly, and you won’t even realize that hours have passed.
Ushering
How: Mrs. Shames will send out information in her NHS update emails
When: Whenever there is a school performance happening! Arrive an hour and a half before the show.
Description: Help hand out programs as people enter the PAC for a show! You will have a stack of programs to hand out and ensure everyone who wants one gets one. Pretty simple! All you have to do is arrive an hour or so before the show starts and meet at a location near the PAC that Mrs. Shames will specify in an email she will send. It only usually takes people about 30 minutes to enter the theater, and you can get around 1-2 service hours! What’s better is after you’re done you can go and see a performance!
