At the start of every year, it’s a great idea to choose a New Year’s Resolution. Setting a practical goal is a strong decision that can be extremely beneficial. Though choosing one may be difficult, consider all the possibilities! In this article, there are many examples provided by GC students, as well as tips from Mr. Abdo and two guidance counselors.

New Year’s Resolution Student Interviews:

“My New Year’s Resolution is to manage my money better. I have a serious shopping problem that I need to better control, so I can save money effectively.” – Madeleine Tiongson 25’

“My New Year’s Resolution is to stop procrastinating and get my act together.” – Michelle Osekwe 25’

“Mine is to be more studious, but keep time for myself too.” – Kiley McEnerney 25’

“I want to work out and reach my goal of being able to squat 225.” – Allison Igbaroola 25’

“I want to be more active in clubs so that I can learn more.” – Evan Nicholas 25’

“My New Year’s Resolution is to be more confident in myself.” – Emma Gieseman 25’

Now for some tips from guidance counselors Mrs. Roeder and Mr. Prodey:

“We suggest we look at New Year’s Resolutions as goals. They must be measurable and realistic. For example, for grades you must study and review your assignments. And for fitness, you must set expectations for your progress and be specific. Say, “I’m going to run a mile every week, instead of only saying I’m going to get fit.’”

Mr. Abdo’s advice is to have a SMART strategy. SMART stands for:

Specific -This is what you want to accomplish, why this goal is important, who is involved, and what resources or limits are involved.
Measurable – This is how many goals (having one is a good idea!), and knowing when it will be accomplished.
Attainable – This means how realistic the goal is based on other constraints, such as factors like resources and financial limits.
Realistic – Meaning, if the goal or goals seem worthwhile, and if it is the right time to achieve them. Think, am I the right person to reach this particular goal?
Time-based – This is very important for anyone, when is the best timing to accomplish this goal. Calculate the results in months, what can I do 6 months from now, or what can I do in 6 weeks, or, what can I do today?

Using the advice provided by the GC staff, take some time for yourself this year! Plan out a successful New Year’s Resolution, with lots of help from friends and family along the way.
