A Walking Tribute to Harriet Tubman

Members of the Good Counsel Community Come Together to pay Tribute to Harriet Tubman

Last Thursday, March 10, as part of a larger event sponsored by Girl Trek, there was a walking tribute here at GC in honor of Harriet Tubman’s 200th birthday. Mrs. Shena Thompson-Jones (GC Counselor) organized the GC event. Mrs. Thompson-Jones is a member of Girl Trek, America’s largest health movement with over one million members, encouraging women of color to walk for self-care. A number of Good Counsel, teachers, staff, and students met at the Kane Center Gym and walked, either inside the school or outside, taking advantage of the cold, crisp morning air.

This tribute walk was organized to remember a true freedom fighter. And to reflect upon how Harriet Tubman dedicated her life to compassion and equality, from freeing enslaved people to advocating for women’s suffrage to caring for the elderly, and how we are called to serve others, for we are all, our brother’s keeper. Harriet Tubman achieved a lot in her lifetime, but ultimately, she demonstrated that one person can make a difference.

Thank you to Mrs. Thompson-Jones for contributing to this article.
