Love is in the Air

Five ways to show someone you appreciate them that aren’t commercialized!

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love, appreciation, and friendship, but has become largely commercialized in recent years.  During Valentine’s Day, gifts can range from cards, to candy, to flowers, which are all ways people express their appreciation. We spend so much on gifts, but does showering those close to us with them really make them feel loved? Here’s something to think about:

“True giving from the heart is an expression of love.” — Cara Stein

Yes, I know what you’re thinking: that’s the silliest thing you’ve heard. But it’s true.  By showing simple acts of kindness and appreciation, you can show those around you that you truly care for them.  Just remember: it’s not about the amount you spend. Instead, it’s the thought that counts.

  1. Why buy a card when you can make one?

Everyone appreciates a homemade gift, and by doing this for someone it shows that you put time and effort into showing how much you care.  If you want to make it shine, add some glitter for some fun!

  1. Send a text message or letter to a friend or family member telling them how much you care about them.

It’s nothing crazy, but if you have a hard time telling people how you feel, this is a great option. You can just say what you feel and not have the pressure of that person standing right in front of you!

  1. Leave a sticky note with a compliment!

This is a great way to brighten someone’s day—maybe even your own. (Don’t forget to love yourself too.) It doesn’t have to be overly complicated. You can say something like, “I love that you’re always there for me” or “I admire your determination”.  These small acts of kindness can really give someone that boost of confidence they need.

  1. Simply say “thank you.”

We really don’t say this enough and it is such an important phrase.  By saying “thank you,” it shows that you acknowledge what someone is doing for you, which they’ll appreciate.

  1. Do something to help them out

The ones we love do so much for us and make so many sacrifices, but do we return the favor? If you want to show someone that you care, help them carry something or hold the door open.  It’s small things like this that signal to a person, “wow you’ve done so much.” Remember, actions speak louder than words.

There are so many other things you can do for the holiday of love, but hopefully these five will get you started.  Just remember that Valentine’s Day is not only a day for buying gifts, but also appreciation and friendship! Make sure you show that appreciation to the people who you care for.
