October 1, 331 BC– Alexander the Great’s Macedonian army wins the decisive battle of Gaugamela against the Persian Achaemenid army of Darius III in modern day Iraq. The victory would ultimately lead to the fall of the Achaemenid Empire and the completion of Alexander’s goal to conquer the Near East.
