Good Counsel’s 2018 Instrumental Christmas Concert

In light of the Christmas season, the Good Counsel Bands, under the direction of Dr. Slocum and Mr. Kramer, presented a Christmas themed instrumental concert this past Thursday and again today, a similar performance was presented for the student body. In preparation for a winter break, hopefully, full of Christmas songs, here is a review of the performance.

The Jazz Band opened the night, playing Christmas music with all sorts of “funky” songs including Deck the Halls With All Sorts of Funky and It Swings Upon A Midnight Clear. They played Christmas music with a jazz twist that one member of the audience described as “the Incredibles soundtrack but with a Christmas theme”. Next, the Chamber Orchestra played a very peaceful Once in Royal David’s City. When the String Ensemble played, the changing volumes and speed of the music clearly moved the audience.

The Christmas theme really kicked in with the Symphonic Band’s performance of Bobsled Run and Canon for Christmas. Following that, the Wind Ensemble played Christmas songs that you might hear in church, adding another aspect of the Christmas feeling. Finally, all 96 members of the band came on stage to perform Sleigh Ride with a surprise costume change that was repeated at their performance for the student body.

Future band performances include a Jazz Night on February 20 and a Spring Instrumental Concert in May.  Make sure to come and enjoy these performances!
