The school library is bustling with exciting changes this semester, offering students amazing resources, events, and opportunities to further enhance their academic and personal growth.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s new and noteworthy (with the help from Ms. Davis, school Librarian):
NEW ADDITIONS
This semester, the library has introduced several captivating new titles, including Kerry Washington’s memoir Thicker than Water and other popular reads from last year, such as Roye Okuoe’s Malika. Ms. Davis notes that she often speaks with English teachers about which genres or specific books are most popular in their classes. These recent additions add to the library’s ever-growing collection, ensuring students have access to both new and beloved books.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The library is planning some fun and engaging events for students. One standout event is the Book Tasting, which occurs Mid-November, where students can sample books from different favorite or new-to-them genres. Come rediscover your love for reading, while munching on some fall-inspired snacks with other bibliophiles.
DIGITAL RESOURCES
The library has expanded its digital offerings, adding a huge number of online books (e-books) and resources for student check-out. With no physical competition for these books, students can easily access titles from their iPads. These resources provide a multitude of information for research and leisure reading, alike.
POPULAR GENRES
According to Ms. Davis, students are gravitating toward genres like suspense, true crime, mystery, horror, and romance. Also, graphic novels are always a favorite, with titles like Calling Caprinac flying off the shelves. However, short stories seem to be less in demand. “Short stories are a great way for students who want a quick read, or students who are beginning their literary journey,” Ms. Davis explained.
STUDY SPACES AND EXPECTATIONS
Due to increased traffic in the library, there are new expectations to promote respect for shared spaces. It is an expectation to treat not only your peers with care but your surrounding as well as the library is a place to come in and study, not a hangout place.
EXAM PREPARATION RESOURCES
The library is working closely with the college counselors to provide valuable SAT Prep advice. While no new physical books have been added specifically for exam preparation, this upcoming collaboration is set to help students succeed in their test preparation by providing study tips as well as materials.
BOOK RECS
Students can now suggest books or materials for the library to purchase through a variety of channels—by email, in person, or by using the suggestion box in the corner of the library. There’s even a new shelf highlighting student recommendations!
With so many exciting new changes, the library is more dynamic and student-focused than ever. Whether you’re looking for your next great read, getting cozy in your favorite study spot (Ms. Davis recommends the armchairs), or looking for research support, there’s something for everyone in the school library.
