GC Fall Sport’s Postseason Overview
Good Counsel sports teams have worked incredibly hard on and off the field this fall, turning in some great performances in the playoffs. Here is an overview of their successes this season:
Volleyball
Good Counsel had a strong season with an overall conference record of 7-6. In the playoffs, they beat McNamara in the quarterfinals even after losing to them in the regular season. Then, in the semifinals, they faced off against the undefeated Holy Cross at their home court. Although Holy Cross had only lost one set the entire season (to Bishop O’Connell), GC was able to take the second set from them before falling short, two sets to one, in the end.
Field Hockey
After winning the quarter-final against St. Mary’s Ryken and pulling off an incredible upset in the semi-finals against Bishop Ireton, GC made it to the championship game against St. John’s on November 6. Unfortunately, several GC players were not feeling their best with the flu, and the Falcons fell 3-0. Still, Coach Kelly Massino was named the 2022 WCAC Field Hockey Coach of the Year in recognition of the team’s outstanding season. Hailey Huebner ‘24, Charley Noah ‘24, and Hannah Rudolph ‘24 were named All WCAC first team. Lucy Beucher ‘25, Erin Fagan ‘23, and Kaleigh Terwilliger ‘25 were named All WCAC second team. And Mary Dow ‘23, Summer Gregory ‘24, and Daniela Serrano ‘25 received All WCAC Honorable Mention.
Girls Soccer
With a conference season record of 7-1 and an overall record of 15-5, the Falcons beat Bishop Ireton in the Quarterfinals 3-0 and Bishop O’Connell 2-0. In the championship game on November 6 at Catholic University, the girl’s team took on the undefeated St. John’s team for a rematch from last year’s championship. Though they put up a tough fight, St. Johns took the title 2-1, as several Good Counsel players suffered from flu-like issues. Congratulations to Drew Bernard ‘23, Peyton Bernard ‘23, Madison Conklin ‘23, and Paige Kush ‘24 for making All WCAC first team. Elle Kristo ‘23 and Cheney Robinson ‘24 made All WCAC second team. And Mayah Soliszewska-Dengu ‘23, Maya Cheeseboro ‘24, and Izzy Daw ‘24 earned All WCAC honorable mention.
Boys Soccer
After winning the WCAC championship last year, the boy’s soccer team went into this season feeling confident. They ended with a strong season record of 7-2-1 and an overall record of 15-3-1. They beat the Heights by one goal in the quarterfinals, though they lost a tough semi-final game to Bishop McNamara by one score. Carter Thomson ‘23, Jordi Lopez ‘23, and Jordy Profeta ‘24 were selected to All WCAC 1st team. Azaria Tewodros ‘23 and Robbie Gresham ‘24 made All WCAC 2nd team. And Dominic Paolucci ‘23, Nico Bustmante ‘23, and Dijon Fosu ‘26 received All WCAC honorable mention.
Football
The football team had a spectacular season with an 8-3 record competing against some of the best teams in the country. The Falcons maintained a No. 1 ranking in the Washington metro area for most of the season. Good Counsel was dominant for most of the WCAC season, including a 24-0 blowout of St. John’s in the regular season. Unfortunately, St. John’s edged out the Falcons in a rematch during the WCAC playoff semi-finals with a score of 14-10.
Cross Country
The GC Cross country team had a memorable season with Florida State commit Leah Stephens ‘23 going undefeated. In the 5k WCAC championships on October 29 at Kenilworth Park, Leah Stephens won the girl’s race by 56 seconds for the second year in a row, breaking the previous record by a minute with a time of 18:01. The girls’ team came in second overall to St. John’s, edging out Holy Cross. The boys’ team took 5th place overall in a challenging field of runners. Leah Stephens also won the Maryland Private School State Championships by nearly two minutes at Georgetown Prep with a time of 18 flat.
Congratulations to all of our Fall sports teams and athletes on incredible seasons.
