Every school day, the Good Counsel (GC) Security Team greets students and staff at the front door and patrols the hallways and grounds. The team has a key role in keeping the school and community safe every day. Its daily responsibilities and personal touches, while focusing on respect and community connections, all contribute to safety.
The security team has two officers, both in their second year as staff members. One is Mr. Kuykendall, a former police officer. “I came here after retiring from 35 years as a police officer,” Kuykendall said. “I was looking forward to a more relaxed environment while still using my various skills to maintain a safe environment for all here at GC.”

Ms. Didone is a security officer as well. Previously, Ms. Didone worked as a police officer and a full-time driver’s education instructor with I Drive Smart. Didone joined the security team because she wanted to maintain a safe environment for everyone while engaging with students.
Morning duty, evening duty, and events are times when the security team contributes to campus life. According to Mr. Kuykendall, a typical shift includes “making sure buildings are locked and secure, monitoring the school grounds, and staying alert to any issues or concerns that may arise.” Monitoring campus, assisting students, and handling emergencies or events are all the security team’s duties.
Continuously walking the hallways, promptly addressing concerns, and even dressing in a relaxed business-casual manner help students and staff feel supported and safe. “The most rewarding part is knowing that our presence helps create a safe and supportive environment for the students to be able to learn in,” Mr. Kuykendall said.

Safety, respect, and connection in a school environment are important. Students should have awareness of their surroundings. If something does not look right, communicate with the security team or even a faculty or staff member. Students should not open the outside doors for anyone during school hours. If students have questions, the security team is always available.
Maintaining a secure, safe campus for everyone and a welcoming school environment are top of mind for the security team. Walk through campus on any given day, and you’ll likely spot Didone or Kuykendall — not just keeping watch, but jumping in wherever they’re needed. “While security is our main focus, we are here to help with whatever needs to be done,” Kuykendall said. Both Didone and Kuykendall enjoy seeing the inner workings of all activities and being a part of the GC community. Their dedication goes far beyond protocol — they’re genuinely invested in the people who make GC special. Thank you, Ms. Didone and Mr. Kuykendall, for your unwavering commitment to keeping our community safe.
