After a long game of back and forth, DeMatha won against Good Counsel with a 41-yard touchdown pass in the 4th quarter.
On October 10, Good Counsel was joined by the Commanders and their mascot, Major Tuddy. Also present was the head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels, Bill Belichick, who was previously the coach for the New England Patriots and has won several Super Bowls with Tom Brady.
Good Counsel had deferred the coin toss, kicking off to DeMatha in the first quarter. Halfway through, DeMatha’s wide receiver caught the ball, but Good Counsel’s (player name or position)tackled him, causing him to fumble the ball. GC’s (position) then picked it up and ran. It was a scoreless first quarter.
In the second quarter, Good Counsel’s player #1, Dylan Cleary, blocked the kick, giving the Falcons the ball on the 11-yard line. DeMatha also came close to scoring a touchdown, but Good Counsel’s corner back covered the wide receiver, batting the ball away. GC’s defense and DeMatha’s offense was doing really well resulting in a lot of back and forth through the second quarter as well. The first half ended with a scoreless, 0-0.
To start off the second half of the game, DeMatha kicked the ball to Good Counsel. On the 3rd down with only 2 yards to go, just short of the yard line, Good Counsel stopped DeMatha from getting a touchdown on the 4th-1. However, despite this close score, the third quarter ended, once again, scoreless.
In the last quarter of the game, Good Counsel scored 2 first downs at the 32-yard and 44-yard line, and almost caught the ball in the end zone, but they fumbled the ball which DeMatha recovered.
The first three quarters were a lot of back and forth, but each team stood their own and kept fighting until the end. With the last 6:00 minutes left of the fourth quarter, DeMatha’s junior quarterback Tristan Sabb made a toss to their senior wide receiver Lavar Keys, scoring the first touchdown of the game, taking the lead. This proved to be the deciding score in an almost entirely scoreless game.
Many thought this game would be a blowout, DeMatha winning by a lot, however the Falcons fought hard against the Stags. One spectator, a DeMatha fan, even said “Good Counsel played really really well”.
This game was a major deal as DeMatha’s Stags had scored 40+ points in three different games this season, then to only 7 against Good Counsel’s falcons. This showed how strong Good Counsel’s defense was on Friday, and the Falcon’s determination to win against another school with a strong football team. This was also their first game against each other since last year’s WCAC championship game where DeMatha won. The Good Counsel Falcons are now (5-3) and are preparing for their next game against Gonzaga on Saturday, October 25.
