Good Counsel’s new principal, GC alum Edward Owusu ‘89, has been warmly welcomed by the GC community during his first few weeks back at the school. With great plans for GC’s future in store, Mr. Owusu is excited to be in an administrative role at the institution that started it all for him, describing his new role as a “personal…return to the community that shaped my own journey of faith, service, and leadership.” In forming connections with students, faculty, and staff as well as planning proactively for GC’s future, Mr. Owusu has already made his mark as a GC administrator during the beginning of his time back at Good Counsel.
Beginning as a student at Good Counsel in the late 1980s, Mr. Owusu has been a member of the GC community for over four decades. During the thirty-six years between his graduation from Good Counsel in 1989 and his return to GC this year, Mr. Owusu has had an incredibly successful academic and professional career. After earning two Bachelor’s Degrees in Education and Applied Science from Virginia Tech in 1994 and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration in 2003 also from Virginia Tech, Owusu served as an educator in many different roles within the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) system. Some of these roles include an eleven-year term as a teacher/instructional specialist in the career and technology divisions at Argyle Middle School and James Hubert Blake High School, a four-year term as the assistant principal of Thomas S. Wooton High School, eight-years as principal of Shady Grove Middle School, and nearly seven-years as principal of Clarksburg High School. Following his impressive career in the classrooms and main offices of the county’s public schools, Owusu served for one year as the executive director of the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals/Business Operations Administrators. In July 2025, he officially began his role as principal of Good Counsel. Mr. Owusu views his new role as a “blessing” that he did not expect: “…when the position opened up…someone reached out to me and let me know and…my heart skipped”. Following his decision to retire from his service of MCPS, the opportunity to serve at GC came with serious discernment. “It’s a blessing…” Owusu shared, “it’s a call because this is a wonderful place where I can truly live out my calling as an educator and also as a Christian.”
One of Mr. Owusu’s goals for his first year as principal at GC is to “be involved and get to know people…form relationships with staff and families and students.” He is glad to experience the unique, caring community that GC is built on that he experienced during his time as a student. “I think that was the thing that I loved [most] about Good Counsel,” Mr. Owusu shared, “there was that care in the community for the students and the faculty.”
Beyond his goals for the year ahead, Mr. Owusu has many ideas about potential improvements to several of GC’s systems. In the years ahead, Mr. Owusu would like to consider an even more hands-on approach to learning at GC. “I would love to see a GC that expand[s] roles for internships for students to take their learning from the classroom and do it in a formalized process,” Owusu stated, “…basically taking the applications that you get from classrooms and being able to see it possible in action, even for a couple of weeks.” Mr. Owusu would also like to provide staff with more opportunities for professional development “that makes their work more aligned and beneficial for both staff and students. “I’d love to be able to provide for the staff the professional development that makes their work more aligned…we as administrators and leadership have to kind of figure out: how do we take what we say and make it ‘do’ so that our ‘say’ and ‘do’ align?” Owusu also plans to consider a new approach to the weighting of grades at GC.
Having spent a long and successful career in education, Mr. Owusu is excited to return to his home at Good Counsel. He is grateful for the opportunity to support the community he has loved for so long through his leadership and administration. We are excited to see all he accomplishes in his new role!
