Senior Spotlight #22: Mary Ellen McDermott

(Here’s a name you hopefully recognize.) Meet Mary Ellen, Co-Executive Editor of The Talon and member of St. Mary’s Scholars and NHS. She is a Pisces and ESFJ and is going to study speech-language pathology at Loyola University Maryland in the fall. Here’s her senior spotlight interview!

What’s your favorite extracurricular activity?

“Being co-executive editor of the Talon is my favorite because I get to be creative and have fun while learning a lot of useful skills.”

What’s your advice for freshmen?

“At the beginning, everyone is in the same boat as you and you might not think that but no one really knows anybody and you just have to put yourself out there.”

If you could be an animal or have any superpower, what would it be?

“I’d say shapeshifting into an animal for my superpower. I could disguise into an ant and go in [small spaces.]”

What’s your favorite book?

“My favorite book is American Royals [by Katherine McGee] and it’s about a hypothetical American royal family. I think it’s really entertaining because we don’t [have one] and it’s crazy to think about what that would be like.”

What’s your favorite GC tradition?

“I’d say junior retreat. It was a good experience to get closer to my classmates.”

What was your favorite part of virtual school?

“The fact that we didn’t have homework and we had time to relax and do hobbies outside of ‘school.’”

What senior superlative do you think you should get?

“Worst luck with lockers because it’s been 2 years in a row now where I can’t open mine easily!”
