GC Rugby Team!

The Good Counsel rugby team has had a great season improving their game as the season goes on. We started the season with some victories against Gonzaga’s B team and Calvert Hall, but work had to be done to compete with harder challenges. At the Jesuit Classic tournament, the team experienced its first loss against Gonzaga but did win two tough games. Most recently, Good counsel played DeMatha for senior night. This game was possible ‘trap’ game, as DeMatha was targeting Good counsel. GC started out well, but DeMatha scored a surprise try near halftime. Good Counsel quickly responded with their own tactics and continued to finish off DeMatha with attempts from David McVeigh and Danny Cummings, under the leadership of captain Leo Fangmeyer. Although Good Counsel played some shaky defense at times, they still got the W with a score of 63-5. In JV game, GC made a comeback in the second half to win 7-5 with great runs by Sydney Minor, rucking and tackling by the whole team, and a try by Josh Thomas. GC rugby now prepares for the playoffs with a home semifinal against Georgetown Prep on Thursday, May 3rd. This will be a huge matchup because we defeated Prep earlier in the season, and they are thirsty for a win. GC rugby hopes to defend their home turf, but a large crowd will help them, and attending the game is a great way to show school spirit while enjoying some good, exciting rugby!
