Fashion Trends: The Year of the Old

It seems that in 2018, we will see more and more of our favorite stores and brands re-working, re-selling discontinued or old styles, and just including straight up vintage pieces whether they are from their brand or not. Why would someone want someone else’s old clothes or something made to look aged or distressed? Well, I find that answer to be quite simple: we find ourselves wanting to be original, to stand out. I mean, when have you ever gone out hoping you’re wearing the same thing as someone else? Probably never. These re-worked or initially vintage pieces give a sense of security that you should be 99% certain that you’re the only person with these styles. They’re also just cool.

Reworked Denim

Reworked Denim is always in style, but this season it seems to be more common than ever. By “Reworked” I mean in the sense of once-vintage (or designed to have a vintage feel or look), with added elements. These elements could be anything from distressing (a personal favorite), embellishments, patches, or sometimes other fabrics layered with the denim. Vintage denim doesn’t just mean jeans; this includes jackets, shirts, skirts, etc. Get these looks from Urban Outfitters, Free People, Etsy, or if you have a little extra to spend, try RE/DONE.

Plaid

Plaid has been a Fall/Winter favorite this year, but lighter plaids like yellows and light blues have extended this trend into the spring. Skirts and pants are what have been most popular with plaid, adding zippers and buttons, giving it a fresh “Cher Horowitz” look, while combining a classic pattern.

If this article has interested you in buying some vintage fashions, I have a few places I’d try: Urban Outfitters has some cool stuff, it might not be as “gritty” as some of the “true” vintage places out there, but it’s an excellent place to start. D.C. doesn’t have too many vintage spots… my personal favorites are up in NYC. My all-time favorite, New York-based while also having an online store, would be The Vintage Twin. That’s some authentic vintage. Also, check out Etsy and search for vintage shops or look for more specific pieces. A personal Etsy shop favorite is called FlyingAppleVintage.
